Cerebral Perfusion in Drowsy and Nondrowsy Individuals

چکیده
1085 Cerebral Perfusion and Drowsiness—Poudel et al INTRODUCTION Lack of sufficient sleep can increase drowsiness and tendency to fall asleep during the day. Increased sleepiness is often manifested as response slowing, behavioral lapses,1-3 and changes in ocular and facial behaviors including droopy eyes, slow eyelid closure, head nodding, and loss of facial tone.4-6 Although total sleep deprivation of 24 h or more substantially impairs neurobehavioral functioning,7,8 an acute reduction in sleep to 4-6 h (sleep restriction) is sufficient to increase tendency to fall asleep during monotonous situations.9-13 Due to shift work, extended work hours, and jet lag, sleep restriction is also more common than total sleep deprivation in everyday life. The increased tendency to fall asleep after sleep loss can compromise an individual’s and public safety, particularly in occupations such as truck drivers, locomotive drivers, pilots, air-traffic controllers, and process-control workers.14,15 For the measurement of behavioral alertness, previous work has relied on reaction time and response error during a sustained attention task,6,16,17 self-rating of sleepiness,18-20 or observer-ratCEREBRAL PERFUSION IN DROWSY AND NONDROWSY INDIVIDUALS

Assessing the Effectiveness of Interactive Media in Improving Drowsy Driver Safety
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the possibility of using interactive media to help drowsy drivers wake up, thereby enabling them to drive more safely. BACKGROUND Many studies have investigated the negative impacts of driver drowsiness and distraction in cars, separately. However, none has studied the potentially positive effects of slightly interactive media for rousing drowsy drivers to he...
متن کاملAbnormal cerebral blood flow in methamphetamine abusers assessed by brain perfusion single emission computed tomography
Introduction:Amphetamines are central nervous system (CNS) stimulant substances and amphetamine abuse is considered a growing problem in our country. Previous studies revealed destructive effects of amphetamines on metabolism, perfusion and structure of brain. The aim of current study was evaluating regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) disturbances in methamphetamine (MA) abuser...
متن کاملModification of acute focal ischemia by treatment with mannitol.
A simple implanted device was used to occlude acutely the left middle cerebral artery (MCA) of 16 conscious cats. Eight received no treatment and 8 were given intravenous mannitol (1.2 gm/kg) at the time of occlusion. The initial neurological findings in both groups were similar, that is, agitation, forced circling, and right hemiparesis. The treated cats remained alert but the untreated cats b...
متن کاملThe role of relative cerebral blood volume obtained from Perfusion Weighted Imaging-MRI in glioma tumor grading before surgery
Introduction: Glioma is the most common type of brain malignancy among adults. Treatment for this type of tumor involves surgery, radiotherapy, and in higher grades, including chemotherapy. The precise grading of the tumor is critical for treatment planning and prognosis determining. Considering the possibility of problems such as errors in tissue sampling during surgery, as we...
متن کاملHybrid Technique to Correct Cerebral Malperfusion Following Repair of a Type A Aortic Dissection
A 49-year-old man with drowsy mentality was diagnosed with acute type A aortic dissection; he underwent an emergency operation. When selective antegrade cerebral perfusion was initiated, the right regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2) decreased as compared to the left one. Adequate blood flow was perfused through the branch of the artificial graft, after distal anastomosis, but the right r...
